The topic is your choice so long as you see a connection to the material we are covering in this course (from the text, lectures, discussions). Your objective is to be enthusiastic about the topic in order for it to remain meaningful to you. Sometimes the inspiration comes from curiosity, disagreement or a passion. You need to demonstrate an understanding of the situation/topic, appreciate the sociological perspectives (theory or theories) that reveal the strengths and weaknesses in your observations or discussion. Finally, you should identify how the paper/topic could be expanded with further research.
Components:
enthusiasm; motivation for selection; understanding; theoretical position/perspective(s); critical thinking; recommendations.
Length: approximately 5-6 pages (double spaced 11/12 pitch)
Style: Chicago (or condensed Turabian*); (APA, MLA optional)
keep in mind that this is more of a term paper than a research paper, so while academic sources are needed, personal understanding and critical thinking is also required.
