As a nation the United States today is a product of its past. Trends or patterns with origins in earlier periods have shaped the political, economic, social and cultural life of our early 21st
century society. Many of these trends can be traced back to the nation’s beginnings, but others developed or accelerated during the period since 1930. Choosing three (3) of these trends (patterns,
tendencies) describe their development from their early period to the present, including their effects or impact. These trends may or may not follow a consistent pattern: some may grow steadily
over time; others rise and fall at different times but move in the same direction.
