Drawing upon relationship advice columns, greeting cards given to friends and lovers, talk show topics, and/or whatever other data you feel would be instructive, in this paper I want you to produce an analysis of the pleasures and perils of pure relationships in the Late Modern Age. Giddens tells us in that in the context of late modernity, the pure relationship becomes central to people’s experiences of the self, and it suggests a significantly different way of relating to others than was found in premodern societies. However, he himself provides us with little evidence to support his claims. Write a paper that uses different data sources to put his argument on display. For instance, you could analyze an episode of a romantic comedy sitcom, and discuss how it displays the central features of the pure relationship as discussed by Giddens.

“In his book, Modernity and Self-Identity, Anthony Giddens explores the ways in which experiences of the self and self-identity have been shaped by the larger social transformations associated with Modernity. One of the central arguments he makes is that in the context of modernity, the self becomes a reflexive project that must be continually monitored and attended to. In this paper, I draw upon Gidden’s work and explore how home decorating has emerged as project of self-making in contemporary society. Drawing upon magazines such as Ladies Home Journal, Country Living, Architecture by Design, I ask, what are the various ways in which decorating the home becomes a means of expressing the self? What kinds of life styles are being constructed in and through these texts and different forms of expert advice? What kinds of anxieties do people have about decorating the home and what might that suggest about their experience of self-identity…..”
