Analyze the rhetoric and evaluate the rhetoric of carpe diem.
The outline.
I. INTRODUCTION: (1-1.5 pp.)
• Define carpe diem: time, religion, purpose.
• Set up purpose of paper: rhetorical analysis and evaluation of carpe diem.
• Forecast the outline: history, analysis, evaluation.
• State thesis clearly: “I will argue X by doing A, B, and C.” (How carpe diem has changed during the years, and that following the biblical world of view, carpe diem is not only about instant gratification it should be about both enjoying and making something productive with your life, using the texts provided)

II. HISTORY: (3 pp.)
• This section is not technically a full history of carpe diem. It is a glimpse into how the concept of carpe diem has changed over time. Analyze the similarities and differences in the concept.
• Texts to use: (a) Horace, (b) Robert Herrick (c) Henry W. Longfellow

III. ANALYSIS: (3 pp.)
• Fitzgerald’s “Winter Dreams.”
• Analyze the rhetoric of carpe diem. Remember, analysis is not just summary. Show the reader how the rhetoric of carpe diem persuades and affects people. How does it work?

IV. EVALUATION: (3 pp.)
• Explain how this concept appears in our current culture: pop music, graduation speeches, etc. (Use the Journal I have attached, this should only be a short intro)
• Use biblical passages and Kierkegaard to create a theological framework in response to carpe diem. (This should be the majority of the 3 pages)
