Political science Instructions: You are to attend a city council meeting (or a community organization meeting) and at this meeting take notes on what is being discussed. By the due date, you will turn in these notes, a city council agenda, and a 4 page report discussing: 1) What meeting you attended, where and when it was located? 2) General information about the council. This should include the council member’s names, their term lengths, and who they represent (are there district elections or at large elections). 3) What happened at this meeting? Specifically, what issues (policy proposals) were discussed? You should discuss at least 2 issues (policy proposals). As a word of advise, I would focus on writing about policies discussed under the “consent calendar” or “new agenda items” portion of the meeting. I would advise against writing about issues discussed during “public comments” given sometimes the public brings up topics that have little to nothing to do with policymaking and there is no obligation for the council to discuss these publicly raised issues at that meeting under state law. 4) Do you think the decisions reached on these issues (policy proposals) were acceptable or unacceptable and why? Note, if they did not make any decisions on the issue, explain how you think they should decide and why. 5) What you took away from this experience? 6) Finally, throughout the paper you are expected to integrate at least 2 political science concepts into the discussion. You should be able to define the concept, and explain how/where you see this concept occurring within the meeting. Concepts can include, but are not limited to: politics, collective action problem, federalism, popular sovereignty, etc.). Structure of Paper Introductory paragraph/s What meeting you attended, where, and when it was located. General information about the council. Provide a general outline explaining what your paper will be doing. Body Paragraphs Each body paragraph should focus on one issue (policy proposal) at a time and at some point tie in political science concepts learned in the course. Each body paragraph should include: 1. A topic addressed at the council meeting. 2. What did the city council members and/or attendees say about this issue/policy proposal. 3. What were the decisions reached on this issue/policy proposal? 4. Do you agree or disagree with the decision reached. Why or why not? Note, if no decision was reached then explain how the council should vote and why they should vote that way. Conclusion What did you take away from the experience? Final thoughts/implications. Notes Please staple your notes and a copy of the meeting agenda to the back of the report. Tips Look at city council calendars as soon as possible so you can properly schedule a meeting to attend. They usually occur only twice a month. Here are some examples. Example – City of Fullerton http://www.ci.fullerton.ca.us/depts/mayor_n_city_council/default.asp Meeting information directly on page. Example – City of Westminster http://www.westminster-ca.gov/cals/comms.asp Click on “Elected Officials” Click on “City Council Calendar” Example – City of Costa Mesa http://www.ci.costa-mesa.ca.us/index.htm Click on “Meeting information” Example – City of Glendale http://www.ci.glendale.ca.us/agenda.asp?OrganizationID=4&Year=2011 Holds meetings every Tuesday at 6:00pm Example – City of Irvine http://www.cityofirvine.org/council/city_council_meetings.asp Holds meetings every second and fourth Tuesday of each month. If you absolutely cannot find a city council time that fits in your schedule, then you may watch a city council meeting online; however, this must be approved by the instructor. Paper Specs (for both) Length At least 4 full pages. There is a 10% point deduction for every omitted page. Font 12 point, Times New Roman only. Spacing Double spaced, 1 inch margins. Grammar Points will be deducted for poor grammar and spelling.

How media reinforces the invisibility of Asian Americans and perpetuates the Black-White Binary within the Affirmative Action Debate Order Description This research paper will focus on how CNN (www.CNN.com) perpetuates the Black-White binary (Perea, 1997) and reinforces the invisibility of Asian Americans within the affirmative action debate post 2003. Please sort through articles on www.cnn.com to determine how media has largely contributed to the silencing of Asian Americans as it relates to affirmative action policies within higher education. Use the Black-White binary as a framework when parsing through the articles. I need the actual findings from the cnn.com research with citations to specific articles illustrating how media reinforces the affirmative action debate as a Black-White issue. Please reference and elaborate on the relevant Supreme Court cases including Grutter v. Bollinger (2003) and Fisher v. University of Texas (2013). Also highlight the invisibility of Asian Americans in the discussion and the problems of their model minority status by specifically looking at those Supreme Court cases. Use as many citations as necessary. I do not need an introduction – I just need the body of the paper to be about the research findings. This assessment is designed to support you towards writing your portfolio. It requires you to independently identify and review relevant literature for one of the topics covered on the module. This should be followed by a filmography – a list of films that can be placed within the context of your chosen topic. Guidance for the Annotated Bibliography/Filmography An annotated bibliography gives an account of the research that has been done on your chosen topic. An annotated bibliography is more than an alphabetical list of research sources – it provides a concise summary of each source and some assessment of its value or relevance. • Your annotated bibliography should include a selection of at least 5 academic sources (i.e., book, journal article, or a book chapter). • Use the correct bibliographic format. For example: o Doll,SusanandGregFaller(1986)‘BladeRunnerandGenre:FilmNoirandScienceFiction’ Literature Film Quarterly 14.2 (1986): 89-100. • You are required to provide an annotation – a full paragraph of discussion of at least 200 words – for each source. • Each annotation (see example below) must briefly restate the main argument of a source (i.e., describe and summarize the argument) and offer a critical evaluation of the source (e.g., what are its strengths, what are its weaknesses). • Title your annotated bibliography ‘Annotated Bibliography on [TOPIC]’ • Your annotated bibliography should be followed by a filmography – a list of at least five films that can be placed within the context of your chosen topic. You are only required to list the films – you don’t need to discuss them. You may include films cited in the annotated bibliography. • Please use the following format for the filmography: oSpacey,K(2005).BeyondtheSea.USA Example of an Annotation Doll, Susan and Greg Faller (1986) ‘Blade Runner and Genre: Film Noir and Science Fiction’ Literature Film Quarterly 14.2 (1986): 89-100. Doll and Faller assert that Ridley Scott's film, Blade Runner, exhibits elements of two distinct pulp genres, film noir and science fiction. The genre cross-pollination is a reflection of Philip K. Dick's novel, Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?, upon which the movie is based. After a useful discussion of genre, the authors go on to effectively discuss defining characteristics of both noir and sci-fi, despite the difficulties of such a project. Through the course of accessible discussion and useful examples from the film, the complexities involved in the combination of genres are revealed. In addition, the article also examines the ways that noir and sci-fi in fact complement each other, noir providing a distinct style and sci-fi a distinct narrative direction. Both genres are also concerned with many of the same issues, especially social constructs, ethics, and the state of being human.
