CHOICE 1: What do children between the ages of 6 and 10 know about death and grief? Select two books written especially for a child (ages 6 to 10) to read and for one of the child’s parents to read as well. The book has to have as its basic theme an explanation of what death is or the dying or death of a person, or coping with loss due to the death of a person or of a pet. You must inform me by Thursday, July 21st, with two copies of a typed page with the titles of the books and explain how each book meets the criteria given in the sentences directly above. Content of the project:
Read and critique each book. Provide a quick overview of the story, and critique each book by applying information from the course materials, lecture notes and any other sources based on scholarship.
Obtain permission from a parent to have his/her 6 to 10 year old child read the books and for the parent to read the books also and discuss the books with their child once both have read them.(THIS PART YOU CAN MAKE UP I WILL PUT THE PARENTS NAME AND PHONE NUMBER)
ITEM 3: Some questions for the parent to ask the child are:
What each book was about, including the main characters and the main theme(s) of the story.
What he/she thinks the author of each book wanted the reader to learn
The important things about death each book taught
If he/she enjoyed reading each book and why or why not
How the story could be made even better in each book
What feelings the child had from reading each book
If the books are ones to recommend to other children and why or why not
ITEM 4: Ask the parent his/her evaluation of the books and what the parent learned about his/her child’s understanding of death from discussing the books.
ITEM 5: Ask the parent if he/she would recommend the books for other children of the same age as the child who read them.
Write up a full report of the information obtained in items 3, 4 and 5, a total of up to 10 pages.
