Using McCloud’s ideas (http://www.jessethompsonart.com/artpage/Pre_C_drawing_Video_files/Understanding%20Comics%20(The%20Invisible%20Art)%20By%20Scott%20McCloud.pdf) of comics as a medium in its own right, and based on your reading, our seminar discussions and your own interests, write a short journal assignment (~1000 words) that deals with semiotic issues relating to the medium, questions of genre (primarily the graphic novel and/or the superhero genre) or a close reading of one (or more) of the comics used on the course. For example, this can of course include close readings of V for Vendetta or Mr Punch, an academic discussion of the politics or aesthetics of the superhero genre, or a paper on how comics communicates.
We would like to stress that you are allowed to take a more linguistic approach to this paper as well, since the concept of semiotics opens up linguistic horizons of great interest.

You may use any of the primary or secondary texts from the Graphic Novel & Superhero sessions.
