Here are some suggestions for possible paper topics:

1. Have you ever moved from one town to another? Write an essay in which you compare two places. Your thesis statement should indicate whether you are emphasizing similarities or differences and
convey your opinion of the new area in which you have moved. If you have never moved, write an essay comparing two places you are familiar with – college and high school, for example.

2. Think of a time when you felt like an outsider. Write an essay in which you compare your actions to those of the members of the group from which you felt estranged.

3. Compare and contrast your fears about starting a new job with what you now know to be true about that job. What bothered you the most prior to starting the job? How did you cope with that fear?
What do you now know about the job? You can also compare and contrast fears about entering college with your progress following six weeks of classes.

4. Compare and contrast two family members. Here you will need to focus on aspect in which you can compare and contrast. For instance, career choices each made. How each approached his or her
studies. You can also show how a grandfather and father looked at and solved a particular problem.

5. Write an essay about a relative or friend you knew as a child and now know as an adult. What strikes you about the differences between past and present for this person?

6. Compare and contrast your college (or high school) with a rival college (or high school).

7. Compare and contrast watching a sporting event (or concert) on TV or in person.
