Critically examine the nature of, and reasons for, differences between Britain’s counter-insurgencies in Aden and Dhofar.

3000 words and I want it to be done before 10 am GMT time.
A few requirements:

Think of your audience: Do not write this for me or for other members of the seminar. Write is for an well educated audience — but who are not people who have taken
this seminar or who are specialists in British COIN (think of people who read the Wall Street Journal or Economist). Write to make the issues and your arguments clear
to such an audience. Avoid insider references and jargon.

Provide a full introduction. Tell the reader what the topic is. Tell the reader how you are going to approach the topic– what questions you will use and why those are
your main questions. Tell the reader about the literature, data and documents you are using- and why these are the appropriate writings and documents. If possible, use
primary documents. There are plenty available. Tell the reader the aim of the essay and refer back to this when you write the conclusion.

Provide a brief background to the event- with key dates and events and frame the issues you will concentrate on.

Argument: this is 60% of the essay. You can focus on 2, at maximum three, issues (and tell the reader why these issues are key). This is so you can provide some depth
to your argument. Use good evidence to support your case. Be specific, use historical examples, use data and statistics whenever possible. Remember, argument by
authority (opinion of some academic) is the weakest form of argument. Write clearly and carefully and avoid vagueness and sweeping, overly broad statements. An essay
at this level ought to have plenty of citations– and please cite properly. You can use Harvard or Chicago. But whatever one you use, be full and specific. If you cite
a quote or event or statistic then give the page number. A cite ought to allow the reader to find the exact cite right away. Too often someone has a quote and then
says (Smith). Well, it’s a bit much to ask the reader to read the entire book to fine one quote.

Remember the basics of writing. Capitalization rules are important. Avoid run-on paragraphs (I’ve seen 1 1/2 page paragraphs). A paragraph is 3-7 sentences built
around one theme. Avoid bullet comment 1-2 sentence paragraphs. That’s bad form as well. Don’t wander, use a ‘chatty’ style (“Now let’s move on to the next
question…”). All that is just wasted verbiage. Keep the writing tight and clear.
Remember to have a coherent conclusion that is fully backed up by evidence and is drawn from your arguments. The conclusion should be short and sharp (no need to
provide a summary in a short essay like this) and provide a supported judgment.

Thorough research is essential. Don’t provide a long bibliography of books that, from the evidence of your argument, you clearly did not read.

I gave detailed guidance on essay writing in the seminars– so there is no excuse for not knowing the essentials for essay writing.
So — remember– provide a good essay outline to me this week.
Final point- Do not be in a huge hurry to get the essay in days before the deadline. The essay does NOT get graded faster ( marks for all are released 15 working days
after the essay deadline). Take your time, go back and check your style, work on correct citations etc. Plan to get the essay turned in in the morning of deadline or
the day before. I have seen a lot of essays that looked like rush jobs turned in days before deadline that had numerous style and spelling and basic grammar errors
that should have been caught. learn to proofread your work for style, clarity and grammar.
