Paper , Order, or Assignment Requirements

Aim and Objectives
Aim:
To demonstrate an understanding of the petroleum system at Wytch Farm in Dorset, and the geological and geophysical techniques used during the exploration phase
Wytch Farm oilfield in Dorset is Europes largest onshore oilfield. It is well studied and well understood, and provides fine examples of all the components of a working petroleum system, namely: source rock, migration pathways, reservoir, seal and trap.

Several geological and geophysical techniques have been used at Wytch Farm during the exploration phase, to make an initial assessment of prospectivity, to confirm the presence of hydrocarbons, and to delineate the structure.

Objectives:
1.To identify, locate and describe the source rocks that generate the hydrocarbons found at Wytch Farm.
2.To identify the means by which hydrocarbons migrate from the source rock kitchen to the reservoir rocks at Wytch Farm.
3.To identify and describe the reservoir rocks at Wytch Farm, and comment on their environment of deposition.
4.To identify and describe the seal for the reservoir at Wytch Farm, and comment on its environment of deposition.
5.To identify and describe the trap at Wytch Farm, and comment on the tectonic events that formed this trap.
6.Identify and briefly describe the geological and geophysical techniques used specifically at Wytch Farm during the exploration phase.

10.Learning Outcomes
This RESIT assignment will explore and evaluate learning outcomes 1 to 4:
1.Examine different geological and geophysical techniques and the contribution they make to oil and gas exploration
2.Apply geological and geophysical techniques to identify and evaluate hydrocarbon plays.
3.Understand the processes involved in the formation of oil & gas
4.Explain how deposition settings affect the characteristics of sedimentary rocks, and how they might be modified by tectonic forces.
