This article will form the case study for this piece of assessment. It outlines a number of field experiments used to determine whether or not $9 price endings are “effective” in a mail order clothing company. Please read the case study carefully. Note, there are a number of equations within the article – you are not expected to understand these and understanding them is not necessary for the purposes of the assignment.

Your task is to “Critically evaluate the study conducted by Anderson and Simester”. Pay particular attention to the study’s purpose and the method used to achieve this purpose. In your answer you may wish to:

  1. Concisely summarise the purpose, method and findings of the article.
  2. Carefully consider the appropriateness of the method used and contrast it with other methods of data collection in marketing research (specifically those which may be applicable here). Clearly explain your reasoning.
  3. What limitations exist within the study? Is any future research needed to establish greater confidence in the findings?

The word limit for the report is 3000-4000 words, excluding references and appendices. There is no set structure for the report but you are strongly urged to use headings and to explain the structure of the report within an Introduction. It is also expected that an Abstract is included at the start of the report. This should be no longer than 400 words.
