Task: Students will write an unfolding case scenario based on an area of interest in palliative care and one that extends their skills and knowledge in this area. The content and context of palliative care needs in an individual, a community, a population or program outlines the holistic and collaborative nature of palliative care philosophy and practice.
The development of an unfolding case scenario requires a number of steps:
1 Selection of topic and review of the literature
2 Development of learning objectives
3. Outlining progression of the case (over time and with multiple perspectives)
Introduction:
Outline of the topic area of the case and how the case will develop problem solving and critical thinking in this area. Outline of the target audience with a rationale for their selection identified.
Background:
Description of the patient/client/resident (and carer), community, population or program, and the context (setting), the problem(s), history and other pertinent data. The information provided in the background must set up the case to unfold. If your case is a community, population or program then the description of an individual context is important to include as it will set up the detail to further inform the work in assessment 2
Learning Objectives:
Describe and detail core learning objectives which align to the target audience and the scope of their learning needs. Learning objectives should include, but are not limited to, assessment and management, interdisciplinary collaboration, communication, safety, and core knowledge of the topic area.
Case scenario:
The case scenario demonstrates a clear progression which includes several consecutive stages that are disclosed across time periods and include information relevant to critical judgement in the case. The case considers more than one perspective (patient, carer, health care professional, group or community) and more than one concept (problem, situation, task/management). The inclusion of interdisciplinary member involvement in the case is required and the role of each member in the case is discussed. Discussion of scenario and rationale for outcomes, activities, assessment, management/treatment/ interventions is included following each scenario progression. Critical thinking questions are included for each scenario progression.
Literature support:
Evidence based literature integrated throughout introduction, background and the case to support content and management within the case. The use of peer reviewed papers is necessary
