Discussion 1: Kristen When researching it is vital to understand what information is accurate and what information is biased or not accurate. One must appraise the article. An appraisal is a step that is finding out more of the article (Brown, 2014). It is not just finding out the why, how, and what of the study one is researching; however, it is making a judgment on how well the study was done (Brown, 2014). When appraising an article, it is looking at if the article is credible, meaningful, bias, and applicable (Brown, 2014). The most important points one wants to assess is if the research is credible. Look to see if the research design and methods match the research question (Brown, 2014). Next, it is important to see if it is clinically significant (Brown, 2014). After reading the study ask oneself if the article had enough impact (Brown, 2014). Think about if the article had sufficient information to make a difference in patients’ health outcomes or decisions (Brown, 2014). Lastly, check to see if the study is applicable (Brown, 2014). Is this research applicable to your area of study (Brown, 2014)? When over viewing an article, it is important to go through these steps to evaluate the information one is going to obtain. In the article written by Kari Sand-Jecklin and Jay Sherman, there were a few issues when it came about their research. One was that the information might be biased (Laureate, 2016). There was no discussion if there was a consent to participate in this research, or requirements to be able to read and write (Laureate, 2016). This was considered a convenient study (Laureate, 2016). This type of sampling can be biased (Laureate, 2016). This is important to consider when evaluating the resource. There were also many different patients and families completing the survey, and this could be a weakness to the article (Laureate, 2016). It can be a weakness because it is a pre-test post-test design (Laureate, 2016). The main problem is that it was not the same individuals completing the same survey at all three times (Laureate, 2016). Also, it was not identified if the nurses that did the surveys at the different times, were the same nurses each time or different nurses (Laureate, 2016). I do believe that there was enough information to find this article reliable. The authors did back their information up and explained that they did know this information could be biased due to the study being a convenient study (Sand-Jecklin & Sherman, 2014). They also saw a positive change with patient handoffs (Sand-Jecklin & Sherman, 2014). They also did not have nurse overtime like expected due to the handoffs, and a more positive attitude (Sand-Jecklin & Sherman, 2014). There was also a decrease in falls at shift change (Sand-Jecklin & Sherman, 2014). I do believe there was enough evidence to consider this study as a possibility for change in the workplace. After following the questions on the appraisal guide, it helped me evaluate the study and determine the reliability of the article. It is important to go through each question and determine if this study will help in one’s clinical arena. There is a lot of research available at one’s fingertips. It is absolute to verify the accuracy of what the study states in the article. When researching, one must ask if the information is credible, clinically significant, and applicable (Brown, 2014). Also, the appraisal guide is an excellent resource to verify the information. The appraisal guide guides the reader through questions. These questions will help check the accuracy of the study.
