Paper , Order, or Assignment Requirements
Focus on one or two characters from Othello and form an argument based on errors in thinking. Look through “Beyond Feelings” to review the logical fallacies and ponder which characters committed which ones. Then, narrow your focus to one or two characters and discuss in your essay what readers learn through their illogical reasoning or arguments. Give examples from the text and make sure to include analysis of those examples.
You may focus on one character or write a comparison or contrast on two characters. Think of the themes of the play (reputation, jealousy, manipulation, loyalty, betrayal, gender limitations/expectations,etc) to get started. How do the characters' errors in thinking affect their approach to or understanding of any of those issues? You may also incorporate any concepts from earlier chapters of “Beyond Feelings”.
Remember: it is not enough in a comparison/contrast paper to simply announce in your thesis that “these two characters have different approaches.” Simply pointing out a difference is NOT an argument. You need to make a claim regarding what we learn through those differences or why it is important that we analyze the differences.
