Essay #3: American Politics: Must We Be Partisan? (Revision) / 10%: You will receive a second, separate grade for revising your in-class essay. The week after you turn in the essay I will return it to you, letting you know what you did well in your essay and what still needs work. In addition to being carefully revised, edited and typed, the new version of your essay will also require further research: 5-7 sources instead of 3-5. Essays should be approximately 1500 words.

Again, when incorporating research into your revision, you must you draw on the work of at least five (5) and no more than seven (7) credible secondary sources who have written about your topic. Your secondary sources should be relevant, credible and current (you may, of course, use some or all of the same sources you brought in for your in-class version). Use MLA documentation to cite your sources, both in the text of your essay, and in a separate Works Cited page at the end.

As you can see below, the rubric for your second essay contains an additional column, which assesses the depth and quality of your revision. This column will have a large impact on your grade, as follows:

An average or substandard first essay that has been thoroughly and thoughtfully revised, will be rewarded accordingly. In other words, the grade will be markedly higher.
An average or substandard first essay that demonstrates little or no effort at revision will be penalized accordingly. In other words, the grade will be markedly lower.
(An excellent first essay that has only minor changes will receive about the same grade.)

IN ORDER FOR ESSAY #3 TO RECEIVE FULL CREDIT, YOU MUST FOLLOW THE SPECIAL FORMATTING INSTRUCTIONS DESCRIBED BELOW.
Heres what you need to do:
1) Write a paragraph or two that describes how you have revised your essay. The more detail you give me about your revision, the more impressed Ill be by the work youve put into it. Attach this material to the beginning of your revised essay.
2) Please highlight any new material in your revised essay by writing it in bold, like this. This will easily allow me to distinguish the new essay from the old one.
3) Cross out any material that you have deleted from your original essay like this.
4) Staple the original draft to the BOTTOM of the revised essay. I will grade the one on top, but I need both.
Your revision wont look pretty (see the sample paragraph posted on Moodle), but it will be easy for me to see where youve made your revisions.
Obviously, the more thorough your revision, the better your chance of receiving a higher grade. Students who simply go through and correct small minor errors will likely receive only a few extra points at most. Students who make substantive improvements based on my end comments and/or conferences with me or a Writing Center tutor will receive the highest grades. If youre not sure how to proceed with your revision, please come see mewith your essayduring my office hours.
