key steps are 1979(first direct elections); 1986 SEA (co-decision); 1992 Maastricht (extention of the co-decision procedure); 1997 Amsterdam and 2001 Nice (no major change regarding legislative procedure but NICE extended ‘judicial powers’ of EP); 2007 Lisbon (co-decision becomes ‘ordinary legislative procedure’.

Key points to find:
1) EP has now become a co-legislator with CoM in most situations governed by the EU treaties
2) The European Council is the key political body where most important strategic decisions are adopted.
