Assignment: Using your independent novel, 1984 by George Orwell, write a literary analysis paper in which you develop a thematic idea based on a set of patterns, repetition, character development, or conflict and resolution. Incorporate approved published literary criticism into your argument to support and substantiate your position.
Minimum Requirements: Papers that fail to meet all minimum requirements will receive a failing grade; papers that meet all of the minimum requirements will receive a passing grade.
Minimum Requirements:
MLA Format: Use standard MLA format found in the seventh edition of the MLA Handbook. Your paper must be typed and evenly double-spaced throughout using one inch margins and size 12 Times New Roman font.
Paper Length Requirement: 1250 minimum to 1500 maximum not including the Works Cited page
Prove Your Thesis: Prove your thesis by analyzing your text and only your text. You may not stray outside the fictionalized realm of the text. (Remember, you must have your thesis approved!).
Comprehensive Use of Text: Argument MUST make use of textual evidence from the BEGINNING, MIDDLE, AND END of the novel.
Primary Source (your novel): Include at least TWO short but substantial quotes from your PRIMARY source per body paragraph. Avoid sophomoric blocks of quotes. Sprinkle quoted phrases throughout your paper.
Secondary Sources (scholarly articles / published literary criticism): Use a minimum of 3 approved secondary sources (maximum of 4), in addition to your primary source (novel). Your secondary sources must be approved scholarly criticisms, either textual or found through the library databases.
Short Quotes: Do not quote more than 1 ½-2 lines of CONSECUTIVE text anywhere in your paper EXCEPT FOR IN THE REQUIRED LONG QUOTE. All other quotes must be MUST BE EMBEDDED in your argument. Move in and out of quotes fluently and grammatically.
1 Long Quote: Include ONE and only one long quotation (as defined by the MLA Handbook) from a SECONDARY SOURCE. Do NOT do NOT do NOT include a long quote from your novel.
Textual Evidence and Analysis: Employ a 1:2 RATIO of textual evidence to analysis or a BALANCED use of textual evidence and analysis.
Grammar and Mechanics standards: Your paper is written at the level of competence expected of a senior in a level English class.
Works Cited page: Include a Works Cited page ALPHABETICALLY listing your primary source and at least 3 approved secondary sources. In order to be included on the Works Cited page, each source must be used and documented at least once in your paper. Your Works Cited page MUST have a minimum of FOUR SOURCES LISTED ON IT: 1 primary source (novel) and at least 3 secondary sources (scholarly criticisms).
