An annotated bibliography is your works cited list with added information for each source. In your annotated bibliography listing, in addition to the citation, each annotation should include a concise summary of and evaluation of the source. Each annotation should be a strong paragraph (about 150 words), double spaced. The annotated sources should be alphabetized by citation, just as you would alphabetize your works cited.

How to Get Started with your Film Research

Your research should focus on locating sources (articles, books and websites) that discuss the film itself, though it is acceptable to also include sources that discuss the American Dream in general, as well. The focus of the Annotated Bibliography and the film essay is to find, analyze and ultimately cite SCHOLARLY or popular articles that support or challenge your thesis and claims about the Connection between the film you watched and the American Dream.

1. Create an MLA formatted Annotated Bibliography that lists and annotates FIVE (5) scholarly and/or critical articles on the film you are writing about.
 1-2 of the 5 sources should be scholarly articles on the film
 1-2 of the 5 sources should be articles that discuss the American Dream in general but they must to be relevant to Dream’s portrayal in your film
 1 of the 5 sources may be credible film reviews or articles relevant to themes examined in the film.
You will also cite your film, but that will not be counted as one of your required five sources and will not need an annotation.
3. Submit the Annotated Bibliography in your GROUP FORUM to share with your peers.

NOTE: You may NOT have more than TWO film reviews. The other three sources must be scholarly articles. In addition, select your sources carefully to be sure they are credible!
Purpose
This assignment will help you to analyze, summarize, and evaluate various types of research material, as well as organize your argument as you prepare for the final essay.
Grading
I will evaluate this assignment to see if the chosen citations are pertinent, if they are in the correct MLA formatting, and if the annotations demonstrate effective critical research evaluation. (50 points for annotated bibliography–10 points per annotated source).

In this film review, David Ansen describes Good Will Hunting as the typical film with a young lost kid, who gets help from many persons around him. The goal is to open up his eyes and let him see that there is more to life than what he is currently doing. Ansen describes that the acting is what makes this film so special and convincing. The chemistry between Will and Chuckie, Sean or his girlfriend is what makes the audience interested and able to feel for Will. Ansen offers a film review with detailed information about the most important scenes in the film. The reader is able to distinguish which of the characters in the film were the most supportive when it came to Will’s realization of his gift and making his dream happen. This film review helps me in my research by describing how the plot is very common but, the various characters involved is what makes it so enticing. This shows to the audience how if the main characters gets help from others and work together the American Dream will be achieved.

This article mentions what Good Will Hunting is really about and touches on the most significant scenes in the film. It explains how Chuckie really is a good friend by letting Will know he should take advantage of the gift he was given. It also discusses identity, which plays a main role in the movie.  Will has to adjust who he is to be able to recognize and make good use of his gift. Golfman summarizes the key scenes in the film by discussing the idea of identity. This article gives the reader a different point of view about the film. It describes the adjustment Will has to mentally go through and how everyone else around him is trying to help him move into the right path. This source fits in to my research, since it demonstrates the main scenes that help Will make the change that will help him get on the right path. These scenes are the ones that help Will achieve the American Dream including a romantic relationship and many good prospects for future jobs.

It also discusses how everyone from any social class is able to reach the American dream. The key role described to reach the American dream is that everyone has to work together to build trust and make the correct path happen. It mentions the “rags to riches” story, living a happy and simple life, and also liberty which makes America the country of opportunities. Michels touches on the principles of the American dream to let the reader connect to their background knowledge and ponder upon what the American dream currently means to someone. The American dream brings different perspectives and it means something different for each person. The author is able to demonstrate the different ways the dream can be reached but focuses on the idea of cooperating with one another. This source helps me in my research by describing the different ways the American dream can be associated. This helps describe what kind of perspective Will’s situation fits into and how it was reached throughput his struggle to find clarity.

This article provides history of the American dream and goes on to explain both the disillusionment and achievement of it. Two different approaches are discussed, the “rags to riches” and “money can’t buy happiness”. Both of these have been very popular ways to put the American dream in film. The author does research on how the American dream in film has changed over the years and finds that characteristics of the American dream myth are complex. Pileggi touches on business related films in her research to see if the idea of the American dream correlates throughout the years. The reader is able to obtain a lot of detailed information on the different perspectives that can make up the American dream either if it is achieved or not. It brings understanding of why the perspectives are popular in film event ‘till this day. This source can help my research by showing the different approaches of the American dream are used in the film. It gives detailed information on why the narratives are commonly used in film. This information is good for support on Will’s accomplishment of the American dream.

This article compares the main characters in the film Good Will Hunting, The Catcher in the Rye, and Portnoy’s Complaint. It mainly discusses their similarities and how they deal with their obstacles. All three characters are rebellious and have a violent past attached to them that makes their present lives difficult. Ziewacz’s comparison of the film and novels is a great source for the reader to comprehend who Will Hunting really is. The article uses key scenes that describe actions done by Will that show his struggle on achieving the American dream. This article is helpful to my research because it describes Will’s personality and behaviors in very detailed manner. The information could easily aid my description of Will and why it became so difficult for him to change and live his past behind.
