Topic: Finding Patriarchy in the American Narrative, 1500-1877
In a well-written and organized essay, students will research and provide evidence of patriarchy by examining the economic, social, and political sources of the American narrative, from 1500 to 1877.
In history, patriarchy is defined as the following:
• Patriarchy is a social structural phenomenon in which males have the privilege of dominance over females, both visibly and subliminally in history. Patriarchy is a social system in which males hold primary power, predominate in roles of political leadership, creation of laws, educational institutions, moral authority, social privilege and control of property. Patriarchy is a system of society or government in which men hold the power and women are largely excluded from it. Patriarchy is manifested in the values, attitudes, customs, expectations, and institutions of the society, and it is maintained through the process of socialization.
Requirements:
• Students will use course textbooks:
o Eric Foner, Give Me Liberty
o Erif Foner, Voices of Freedom
o David Brion Davis, Inhuman Bondage
• Historical Examples: Students will provide no less than five examples of patriarchy in history.
• Students will include primary sources, from Voices of Freedom or the college library, to demonstrate breadth and depth of subject.
• Students are required to use one external source (scholarly article, journal, or book) from the online database through the college library.
Writing Style and Structure:
• Thesis. Supporting Evidence. Conclusion. Works Cited.
