FORMAL VISUAL ANALYSIS
One way of writing about images is the “formal” analysis. Although there are a number of ways to do this, most analyses contain discussions or descriptions of these basic visual elements, which are also sometimes called formal elements.
• Line – Lines can outline a figure, but also indicate motion, mood, or many other concepts.
• Color – technically, color is described in terms of hue, value, and saturation, which are expressed in printing with numerical values. In writing, these building blocks of color are usually evaluated with descriptive words or value-loaded words which are culturally determined.
• Shape – The two dimensional properties of the image or figure. • Form – The three dimensional properties of the image or figure. • Naturalism – How does the maker approach (or not approach) thedepiction of the “real” world.
