Genetically Modified Salmon Research Paper Academic Essay

Be sure to cover the points mentioned above and define all technical terms that you use in your own words.
Your paper needs to be written so the average person can understand it.
Your paper must be 2 pages ( 5 lines) (not including references). Your paper should be double-spaced with oneinch
margins, using 12 point Times New Roman font. No cover page or heading is required (the body of your
paper should begin on the first line of the first page).
You are not allowed to include any quotes in your paper. All of your writing must be original. You must properly
paraphrase ideas from the literature, even if you provide an in-text citation.
Information and ideas that are properly paraphrased must be accompanied by proper in-text citations in the
body of your paper and a corresponding reference in American Psychological Association (APA) format. Note:
only the references need to be in APA, other APA formatting items (such as a title page) are not required.
You need to review your paper for format, spelling, grammar and usage errors before you submit it, or you will
lose points.
Please also review the grading rubric before submitting your paper to make sure that you have done everything
you can to receive a good grade.

The evaluation of reliability is important because the information that ends up in your paper needs to be scientifically accurate. If you present scientifically inaccurate information you will earn a low grade. I will be looking for you to be able to distinguish between what has been scientifically shown with a good deal of certainty, what has been indicated but needs to be investigated further, what is a possible effect, and what is speculation. There is a big difference between stating that there is some concern that GM salmon may present health risks to people (accurate), and stating that they have been proven to be dangerous (not accurate). A quality, science-based argument can be made both in favor of and against GM salmon you are not being graded on your opinion for this paper but the argument must be scientifically accurate or you will score poorly.

A few additional tips:

Simply having an author and/or date on a source of information does not mean it is a reliable reference to use. Other factors, such as the intent of the author for presenting this information, their credentials, is it found in a peer-review publication, etc. need to be considered.
Remember, as stated in the brief video at http://libraryanswers.fullerton.edu/a.php?qid=165364 anyone can obtain an .org website so this alone does not indicate that this is a reliable source.
Basically, you really need to consider all the criteria discussed at http://libraryanswers.fullerton.edu/a.php?qid=165364 in order to determine whether or not this is the quality source for you to use.
As for the use of quotes, you are NOT allowed to use direct quotes in your paper. One purpose of the paper is to demonstrate your understanding of a biological concept. Using direct quotes does not show that you actually understand the topic. All the information in your paper needs to be written in your own words. Please keep in mind that changing one or two words in a sentence or simply combining two sentences into one, is considered plagiarism (see http://turnitin.com/assets/en_us/media/plagiarism_spectrum.php ). The best way to avoid an issue is the read your source, put it completely away so you cannot see it, and then summarize what it said in your own words. By removing it from your view, it becomes very difficult to accidentally copy a sentence or several phrases.
For your reference page – the author of a source does not have to be a person. If no specific author is listed, an organization, such as the FDA, CDC, etc., could be the author of a source and should be listed as such.
Keep in mind the date of a publication, especially about a technology that is still advancing. Some of the concerns raised in older publications may have been addressed by scientists and would no longer be considered an issue (i.e. science has learned from its mistakes).
