When you formulate a problem statement, you should write it in a general-to-specific paragraph format that uses statistics to justify and illustrate the problem and you should document the statistics with cited sources. The following are examples of some statistics found in literature that were used for a healthcare research study:
1. General Problem identifying the need for a study: More than 800 fatalities have occurred each year from intravenous catheter septic phlebitis (cite source).
2. Specific Problem: In one U.S. hospital, septicemias were found in 30% of the 5,740 intravenous catheter populations with the intravenous therapy team responsible for 5% and the house staff for 25% (source, year). Out of 391 catheters, positive cultures were found in 18 (4.6%) catheters inserted by the house staff as compared to 8 (2%) inserted by the intravenous therapy team (cite source).
3. General population group of study is identified (written in future tense): The entire population of peripheral intravenous catheter sites of patients from obstetrical, gynecological, surgical, neurological, and orthopedic floors at a Southern California acute-care hospital will be included in the study.
4. Approach to be used: Catheter sites not inserted by the intravenous therapy team will be those inserted by medical students, interns, residents, physicians, emergency room nurses, anesthesiologists in the operating room, and specialty unit nurses (Trent, 1984).
