Introduction

In the past century, motor vehicles have become an essential aspect of everyone?s lives. From Henry Ford to Elon Musk, personal modes of transport have developed substantially. Today, electric vehicles are no longer a niche product for the technologically savvy and/or conservationist. An electric powered car can compete with luxury vehicles with an internal combustion engine on the basis of performance, reliability and practicality For example, a Tesla Model S, an electric vehicle (EV) matches it?s rival sedans such as a Mercedes S-class in all three of the aforementioned basis. Reaching this point was difficult. Many external stakeholders, such as petroleum companies, hold interest in the failure of alternatives to an internal combustion engine. However, support from governmental regulations and incentives assisted in the exponential growth in the electric car industry. This research paper will examine the extent of which the Obama administration assisted in the development of alternatives to the internal combustion engine in the United States. Under the Obama administration, the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Goal 1, Objective 5 states that by 2020 the United States will ?reduce emissions and associated impacts through energy efficiency and/or alternative/renewable energy projects.? The US is achieving this by introducing legislation regarding emissions, tax incentives on Low emission vehicles and loans to car companies to promote the development of electric cars on both a federal and state levels.

This topic is worthy of investigation because the current rate of fossil fuel usage by the United States and the world is not sustainable. The amount of emissions produced by internal combustion engines are contributing to the large amounts of greenhouse gasses in the atmosphere. The plan of investigation is to analyse both primary and secondary sources; such as, legislation, scholarly journals, and articles.

The two subjects used to investigate my research question is Business and Environmental systems and societies. Business is used to investigate the effects of the governmental policies on firms that develop alternative energy vehicles. Environmental systems and societies is used to analyze the data that CO2 has had on the environment and why the Obama administration is committed to minimizing CO2 emissions.
