Story 1 the Book of Genesis
Language in Genesis
1. God appears without a “mythology”- we only know God as a creative entity, and we know that God creates through speech-the divine creative power is made manifest in speech.
2. “And God said let there be light and there was light…” First the name come, then the physical, perceptible entities appears. By this logic, to name something correctly is to commune with the original “divine” force of that object. Language is a way to communing with creation. A way of “separating” and rendering distinct.
3. Man, made in God’s Image, will also approach the world through the use of words. Adam’s first duty is to name the creatures of earth.
4. One of the major difference between Elohim and Yahweh-note the names –is the way they create and what they use language to do. Order as separation vs. order as dominion and subjection. Eloquence vs. Rhetoric.
5. Names: Yahweh/Elohim, Adam before and after he is cursed.
6. How does the serpent beguile Eve?
7. Tower of Babel narrative ?
