In the land of free trade, the public does not view all industries as equal. Do you believe that is ethical? Do you believe that some industries are unfairly targeted? Should it be consumers’ choice to partake in products that are not healthy for them, or do those companies have an ethical obligation to protect people? In this assignment, you will choose one (1) industry to write about. Possible industries to research could be tobacco, soda, alcohol, casinos, or candy companies, just to name a few. Write a one and a half to two (1½ – 2) page paper in which you:

1.Become an advocate for either the consumer or the industry. Prepare an argument explaining the major reasons why you support either the consumer or the industry.

2.Explain the role capitalism plays in corporate decision making.

3.Discuss if you believe it is possible for a company to cater to both its best interest and that of the consumer conjointly or if one always has to prevail. Justify your response.

Not all Companies are Viewed as Equal  

  For this assignment I have chose to talk about a Tobacco company that goes by the name of Marlboro, and the reason I chose this topic is because I currently smoke myself. I find it hard to quit because I have tried to plenty of times. I believe that each company should be viewed as equal because they all have there very own products that they sell. I find it unethical to say that not all industries are the same. Just because you may not like one of them for instance like alcohol, you say their industry is not equal to the goodwill. Well, for one they are different companies with different types of goals. One runs off of strictly donations to profit from and the other company makes a product that some consumers love. So, what I am trying to say here is that just because you don’t like a certain company, or you dislike what their mission or goals are doesn’t mean that their industry is unethical. It just means that you have different likes and view about there product. I think this is more of an opinion than anything, there are no kind of facts laid out that they are unethical.

  I honestly think (this is just my opinion though) that is should be a consumer’s choice to partake in any product that they personally like whether it be food or a cigarette. In the land of the free (freedom) we choose what we want to do and what we want to consume as long as it is not illegal. Some industries such as tobacco industries are unfairly targeted, and consumers should understand that they have a free choice on whether they use or do not use their products. I believe the Tobacco industry should be able to market as any other product just as it is a consumer’s choice if they use the product. In addition, by tobacco industries displaying the surgeon general’s warning that should be guidance enough for consumers to make the right choice. After that, it’s no longer nobody’s choice but your very own. That’s just like food, there’s an obvious warning that if you eat a lot of sweets and fattening foods that you’ll gain weight. That’s just like tobacco products people choice what they want to consume or do with there body even when they see all of the warning signals or labels.
