Please choose one of the four following essay topics. The essay should be 2,000 words (+/10%), and should employ Harvard referencing and

maintain professional levels of style,
spelling and punctuation. Please note that lack of use of in-text citations and of essential
readings given in the module leads to automatic fail. For an overview of the concepts we
have been discussing in information systems please consult the Glossary, which can be found
at study direct. We have a very firm approach to plagiarism, personation and other forms of
academic misconduct. All students on the module are expected to be familiar with University
rules for using references.
Essay topics
Apply the sociotechnical debate to the emergence of two technologies – one developed before
1920 and one after. What are the implications of your analysis for our understanding of
technological innovations? You are advised to choose technologies we discussed in the
lectures and seminars.
Critically discuss how and in what ways information technology has changed how we
collaborate in organisations and the implications of such change using two concepts from the
module.
Information systems and technologies are political. Use two concepts from the module to
illustrate this point and reflect on the implications of your analysis for the users of those
systems and technologies.
Discuss two challenges from the implementation of information systems in the public sector
and provide recommendations to overcome them.
