Paper, Order, or Assignment Requirements

Since we will be using Tuong Vu’s analytical framework in comparing the economies and politics of different countries in future classes, I would like to make sure that you are well-versed in his framework that relies on intra-elite relations (unity, fragmentation, compromise, and/or polarization) and elite-mass relations (incorporation, suppression, and controlled mobilization). Please re-read pages 8 to 19 of Tuong Vu’s article I sent yesterday.

1. Please write a one- to two pages essay describing the different modes of intra-elite relations and elite-mass relations and how each strengthens or weakens the capacity of developmental state.

2. Please apply the framework to the case of Taiwan postwar state formation or state-building experience using Chu and Lin’s article. Having fled the mainland China, was the KMT united, fragmented, compromised, or polarized in Taiwan? What about the relations of KMT with the Taiwanese- did KMT use suppression, controlled mobilization and/or incorporation. These conditions can take place in sequence.
