This was a question that the tutor answered to clarify the mean and SD:
Question: I went to the statistics of the test (as you suggested in the tutorial), however, am a bit confused by them. The statistics for their “total scores” gives n=15885, and then a mean=109.59
and SD = 18.669. I think in the tutorial we were just taking that the mean was 100 and the SD was 15. So… what does the site’s statistics mean in relation to our interpretation? In the tutorial
the example the person’s score was 84 and in the 14th percentile. So.. that person’s result would be more than 1SD below the mean, not within it. I don’t want to get too hung up on stats, but you
advised us to briefly interprete our results against the site’s normative data, so do I use 100 as the mean and SD of 15 or the site’s elevated scores? Or have I lost the plot?
Answer: You have definitely not lost the plot! Stick with the basics; you are given a normal graph so consider 100 as the mean and 15 as the SD and compare your scores to that. You interpretation
of the example from the tutorial is correct.
I hope this helps a little.
