Learning Activity 8.3: Major Assignment 3: An Issue in Family Work

Value: 20% of course grade

Objectives:

The purpose of this assignment is to give you the opportunity to do the following:

1. a)  Research a family issue in greater depth (beyond the scope of the course modules).
2. b)  Demonstrate your knowledge of the family issue.
3. c)  Explain what dynamics involved in this family issue you would need to consider in doing family intervention work.
4. d)  Design some interventions that will enhance family resilience.

Directions:

1. Choose one of the following issues in family work to research and write your

final paper on:

• incest

• family violence
• cultural diversity
1. Research this family issue in depth using campus or community libraries. Databases available at the MacEwan Library website are recommended, because some Internet sources may not be academically reputable (for example, do not use Wikipedia.com).

1. Describe the family issue in terms of incidence, roles and rules, and how it affects family functioning, dynamics, and individual members.
2. Describe three specific systemic issues that you would need to understand in order to intervene effectively as their family support worker.
3. From a resilience framework, design three strategies that you would use to build strength, support, and resilience as well as prevent issues for the members of this family.
4. Provide a list of references for the research you conducted on this subject (use APA format).

Length of paper: 8–10 pages (typed double-spaced in a 12-point Times or Times New Roman font)

Criteria for Grading

• All components of the assignment are completed.
• Information presented on family issue demonstrates knowledge of family

systems in general, and incest, family violence, or cultural diversity in

particular.

• Strategies for working with the family are creative and realistic.
• Strategies focus on building strengths and resilience, as well as building

support systems, while decreasing risks and stresses.

• Student is able to anticipate difficulties that may occur in treating the

family.

• Eighty per cent of your mark will be based on the content of your paper.

Twenty per cent will be based on the quality of your written work (i.e., grammar, spelling, APA format, writing style, and clarity).
