**Midterm essay requirements**

1. Write 700-900 words (3 pages double spaced, Times New Roman 12 pt font, 1 inch margins) comparing Plato’s allegory of the cave with either of the following movies: The Island (2005) or The Truman Show. You must demonstrate accurate knowledge of the allegory and an ability to utilize it to analyze your film.
Your paper must contain the following elements:

• Introduction with thesis statement. The thesis is the insight you will attempt to prove with evidence. Your thesis will make a claim about the similarities and/or differences between your movie and Plato’s Allegory of the Cave.
• At least 3 points supporting your thesis using evidence demonstrating your thesis (minimum of one paragraph for each point). These 3 points will relate specific elements of the film (ex. characters, dialogue, visual images, plot elements) to specific features of Plato’s allegory of the cave. Do not merely summarize. Make sure your descriptions are in your own words. Cite brief passages of Plato’s Rebublic (as found on pp 245-249 of Chaffee) and dialogue from the film in quotation marks with parenthetical citation, MLA or Turabian style. Make sure each point demonstrates your thesis.
• Conclusion restating your thesis with elaboration or modification, based on your evidence.

Please pay careful attention to spelling, grammar, structure (paragraphs and organization), and proper citation of sources. Consult the Critical Thinking Paper Rubric under the Papers Tab to see how your paper grade will be assessed. Writing resources are available at Purdue Online Writing Lab.
