The goal of this assignment is to demonstrate your group’s ability to understand, evaluate, and apply, the ideas and concepts presented in class through analysis of a current issue/event as reported in a reputable news article. The article chosen must highlight components of the previous week’s lessons/topics, including major theories and concepts. The analysis of the news article should include some discussion around the source of the news article as well as alternative perspectives on the news topic presented (2-3 alternative views minimum). Students will first deliver a presentation on the current issue/event to outline the most important issues, topics and analysis and apply them to the previous week’s lessons/discussions. The group will also be responsible for facilitating a class discussion on the concepts and article presented. This means being respectful of everyone’s opinions, asking prompting questions, and being an active listener and participant in the discussion.

Students will select one article to analyze, the article must be current in nature and from a reputable news source. This means you must understand and analyze where the article has come from, identify potential biases and how this might affect the opinion or perspective of the writer. The purpose of this activity is to allow students the opportunity to apply theories and concepts that are discussed in the course to contemporary issues. All presentations must be completed by week 10.
Class Presentation: What you will need to cover/consider

• Presentation Summary:
o Brief outline of the most salient points of the article and connect them to the concepts from course.
o What is the main issue being discussed in the news article?
o What are the main topics as they relate to the previous week’s class/lecture/readings?
o How is the article directly connected to the previous weeks concepts/content
o Identify if a social analysis framework is being used by the author of the article
• Presentation Critiques:
o Who wrote/sourced the new article?
o Is the news article sympathetic to the current issue being presented or highly critical?
o Do you detect any biases, gaps, omissions, generalizations, and distortions in the article?
o What evidence does the author/s use to prove the argument/s?
o What alternative views exist related to this current issue (minimum 2-3)
• Supporting/Presentation Materials Expected:
o Article selected from a reputable news source
o Clear version/summary of the news story to share with the class in relation to the concepts you are discussing
o Clear identification of the key concepts and themes from class the previous week
o Power Points are encouraged or group activities/exercises if power point is not appropriate to your presentation.
o A minimum of 3 questions for discussion and/or appropriate ice breaker activity that reinforces concepts in the reading

Structure
15 minutes Presentation: Concepts and Critique
10 minutes Group discussion led by discussion questions
5 minutes Q&A and wrap-up

• Discuss with your faculty what a reputable news source is
• Divide up group work early on, clearly assigning each group member a role/task
• Familiarize yourself early with the relevant weeks topics, readings, and key concepts
• Establish clarity on the information within the news article chosen, what the main issues are, and how they relate to the corresponding weeks concepts
• Reference where appropriate on power points
• Practice what you will say – speak loudly and clear
