Week Seven – Final Assignment

Students will answer an open-ended question based on ideas found in the course materials and explored in weekly discussions. Frequent references to the authors and works in the course materials are required to show an assimilation of the readings. Each assignment will be no fewer than 1500 and no more than 2500 words.

Question: Olivier Roy has argued that “neofundamentalism promotes the decontextualisation of religious practices” and that neofundamentalism is “perfectly adapted to a basic dimension of contemporary globalisation: that of turning human behavior into codes, and patterns of consumption and communication, delinked from any specific culture” (Roy 2004. 258).

Do you agree with Roy’s premise – that globalization is a process of “turning human behavior into codes … [with] patterns of consumption and communication … delinked from any specific culture”? Why or why not? What is your evidence?
