This assignment requires you to identify and justify advocacy strategies and their influence on public policy. Use the public policy you’ve selected for your previous assignment. Take your research further to determine what external factors—people, groups, actions—led to the policy’s approval. Though you aren’t trying to do a projection, prediction, or a “look forward”, the general idea is that someone who reads these papers can get a sense of “lessons learned” or “best practices”, which means they can use these papers to adopt advocacy strategies that can lead to potential future successful policy change. It is important that you understand, as our readings explained, that there is no one way to evaluate the “success” of advocacy; in fact, there are dozens of ways to analyze and interpret why some public policies get approved and why others don’t. Thus, the most important part of your paper will be in the justification of why/how you believe the strategy you have identified led to the successful approval of the selected policy. You must include all the necessary information to get this across. There is no exact definition of necessary information; there is no set time-frame for the history or background, nor is there an exact amount of evidence that must be given in order to justify the strategy you’ve identified. Determining what constitutes all of the above is an important part of the critical thinking that goes into this assignment.
