The reserve design exercises in this practical are designed to illustrate the computational intensity and complexity involved in searching for optimal reserve
networks (Part 1), and to evaluate the effects of economic (Part 2 & 3) and ecological (Parts 3 and 4a & b) constraints on the decision making process- In
Part 1 you will be asked to perform manual calculations to ensure that you understand what Excel will do for you via the Add-in software, Solver, in the
remaining parts- Remember to consider the objective of each exercise as you carry out the steps prescribed below. Those objectives are the research
questions you will address in your report-

For your report, you will be presenting your findings from today’s exercises in a scientific report format (Introduction, Methods, Results, Discussion) prepared
like you would to submit your research to a scientific journal- Each of the exercises outlined below are the experimental and data collection aspects of your
study, testing the implications of including different constraints in reserve design-
