The objective of this assignment is to have students examine nineteenth century slave narratives from the University of North Carolina’s Documenting the American South” website to obtain a more accurate, well balanced account of the nature of the institution of slavery in the antebellum South and its impact on black men, women and children, individually and collectively. Instructions: Visit the following website: http://docsouth.unc.edu/, Click” Collections” at the top of the page. Scroll down to North American Slave Narratives. Click Browse this collection alphabetically. Select a narrative that is at least 50 pages long. You can select any of the narratives except the narrative of Frederick Douglass and Booker T. Washington. After you click on a name, read the entire narrative. The best version is probably the HTML file. Read the entire narrative. Write a 5 page summary of the narrative, focusing on the following themes: Name, Place of Birth, Place or places of enslavement, Work, Family, Master Slave Relationship (How did they describe the relationship with the master?, Religious life, Resistance, Emancipation, Other interesting aspects of their experiences as a slave, After writing the summary, address the following questions: A, What did you learn about this particular slavery experience that was included in your textbook, The Struggle for Freedom? B, What did you learn about this particular slavery experience that was not included in your textbook, The Struggle for Freedom? C, How did your ideas about North American slavery change after reading the narrative? D, What was the most interesting part of their story? Be sure to cite specific information from the narrative. In your summary, please do not simply copy information word for word. Tell their story. You can quote the author from time to time. However, do not simply re-write their words.
