According to St. Thomas Aquinas’ “doctrine of double effect”, it is always unacceptable to use something bad as a means to something else, even to something else that is good. Kant says that it is always immoral to use any person as a means to an end, because people are ends in and of themselves— they are not tools, not instruments to be used. Are Kant and Aquinas correct?
