For this paper, you will choose and analyze one important symbol in the novel The Saffron Kitchen. You may not choose the red book. To begin, you should keep notes about each time the symbol appears. Note the page number, and summarize in your own words what is happening in the novel when that symbol appears, what the symbol means, and how the symbol’s meaning here builds on its meaning elsewhere in the book. Once you have gathered these notes from the entire novel, brainstorm a thesis that states your overall interpretation of the symbol. (For extra help on this, look back at the chapter on symbolism in The Norton Introduction to Literature; pages 210-211 should be particularly helpful.)
