The topic can be on any facet or feature of celebrity cultures . Ideally, it should draw in some way from issues, ideas, theories and/or arguments covered in the unit or from the field of celebrity studies more generally.

Essentially, you are asked to write and submit a 2000-word research essay on a question or topic of your own choice and design. That topic can be anything that pertains to the concerns of this unit or the academic field of celebrity studies at large.

The rationale behind inviting you to design your own research projects is varied:

student-led assessment encourages deeper and more active learning
students develop and hone important professional skills in project-design and management
students get the opportunity to work on a topic in which they are directly invested
the experience is more engaging and worthwhile for students as researchers and writers
For those reasons, I am reluctant to offer too many additional guidelines. i want to keep the terms of the exercise as open as possible so that you have maximum room to pursue your intellectual interests and passions and sharp your essays accordingly. The only things I would point out in advance are:

the essay must be focussed on some aspect or feature of celebrity culture (but within those very broad terms, it can focus on absolutely anything)
it must be an academic research essay (i.e. it has to be based on and informed by scholarly research)
there is no fixed number of scholarly sources to be used as different projects will have different research needs
nevertheless, a general rule of thumb is that essays will likely include > 4-6 scholarly sources
you are of course free to use non-scholarly sources as well but the essay needs to be fully grounded in academic research
you need to show evidence of scholarly research in your argument via standard conventions of academic research writing (e.g. quotes, references, paraphrase, etc)
you can use any citational style
word length is 2000 words (+/- 10%)
assessment criteria:

Due to the broad nature of the exercise, essays won’t be graded against a prescribed rubric. However, basic criteria for academic research writing will apply:

the topic is well chosen and appropriate to the academic concerns of the unit
the topic is effectively framed relative to the size and scope of the exercise
the essay mounts a well reasoned and critically-informed discussion/reading/analysis and/or argument
the essay is well planned and coherently structured
the essay shows evidence of scholarly research
the essay is well written and presented
the essay uses appropriate conventions of academic research such as citational style, referencing, documentation etc
