Several common trends in employment and households transitions over the life course have emerged in advanced economies since the 1970s. Women account for a growing proportion of the labour force, producing a shift away from the single-earner ‘male breadwinner’ to ‘dual-earner’ working arrangements in couples. Working life has been compressed into a narrower age range through the extension of education and retirement systems. There has also been a substantial increase in the amount of ‘free time’ in societies over many decades. Reductions in average annual working hours have also been achieved (Bosch et al, 1994). Time devoted to housework has also fallen as many elements of domestic production have been outsourced to market services and the public sector (aspects of food preparation, cleaning repairs, childcare, etc.) and technological innovation in ‘labour-saving’ consumer goods has also played a role (washing machine, dishwasher, microwave, etc.).

However, pronounced gender inequalities in time-use persist. Women’s time allocation to employment during the ‘working years’ has increased since the 1960s. (Blossfeld & Hakim, 1997; Rubery et al, 1999; Blossfeld & Drobnic, 2001), partly offsetting the reduction among men. Yet the bulk of unpaid housework and care activities are still predominantly performed by women, even though men’s relative contribution has increased in most countries (Gershuny, 200; Anxo et al, 2002). The resilience of this traditional gender division of labour has dynamic implications across the life course in terms of gender inequalities in career prospects, lifetime earnings and the accumulation of pension and other welfare entitlements.
