Watch the 13th documentary film in Netflix and All students must write 5 reflections each worth 20 points. Reflections are an opportunity for students to gradually apply their sociological imagination. Moreover, they will provide students with material to utilize for class participation and for the development of the class project. Students are encouraged to use artwork such as song lyrics, images, and poetry, among others that relate to how they are developing their sociological imagination and expanding their understanding of Sociology. From a sociological perspective, there are four main identifying characteristics:

Deviance emerges in a social context, not just in the behavior of individuals.
Groups judge behaviors differently. What is deviant to one group may be normative to another.
Established rules and norms are socially created, not just morally decided or individually imposed.
Deviance lies not just in behavior itself but also in the social responses to behavior and people engaged in the behavior
For your first reflection, select from a functionalist OR conflict theory on deviance to write your reflection on the film 13th. Start your reflection by explaining deviance based on the theory you are selecting and then, reflect on what you learned from the film that supports of contrasts the theory you selected. I recommend you consider the above identifying characteristics of deviance and try and answer: What was the social context in which the era of mass incarceration emerged? How are the rules and norm surrounding mass incarceration socially created? Who benefits?
