Street Network Connectivity
Various attributes of urban environment have great influence on physical activities. These include residency density, land use mix, and street connectivity (Reis, et al. 2013). The purpose of this paper is to measure street network connectivity (urban environment attribute) in relation to physical activity. Rapidly sprawling urban areas with disconnected streets networks and fragmented land uses prevent people-oriented transportation travel modes. Connectivity impacts the extent to which networks like streets, cycling and walking paths connect individuals to their immediate destinations. Good connectivity offers easy access to major destinations for pedestrians. In fact increased network connectivity seeks to dissuade vehicle use by rendering local trips more pleasant and easier by foot.
The density and type of intersection in the network connectivity has a huge effect on how residents move around. A more permeable network has more intersections making it easy to reach the intended destination by using various routes or a direct route. When blended with mixed land use, excellent street network connectivity increases the chances for people to walk to carry out daily tasks, as opposed to driving. In fact, increased street connectivity combined with mixed land use leads to increased walkability and consequently, better health.
Physical Activity
Street connected is related to the challenge of physical activity. Increasing engagement in physical activity has been recognized as public health priority. In interaction with other factors, environmental attributes have been found to impact physical activities patterns. For example, changes in built environment and urbanization patterns, and dependence on cars for transportation have been identified as leading contributors to physical inactivity (Sallis et al., 2016).
Walking for daily tasks, transportation and recreational purposes may greatly contribute to the daily physical activity levels, and therefore help prevent overweight, obesity, diabetes and even cardiovascular diseases. The presence of densely interconnected…………………………………
