In 2003 Mike Morwood and colleagues discovered skeletons of small humans in a cave on the Indonesian island of Flores. Many scientists suggest they represent a small species of humans, now extinct, called Homo floresiensis that evolved on the island. Other scientist suggest they are really just fossils of Homo sapiens afflicted with some sort of medical condition such as microcephaly or dwarfism. Discuss the scientific evidence and present your conclusion: Are the Floresian hobbits a unique species or just ‘diseased’ Homo sapiens?
