Paper, Order, or Assignment Requirements

This Paper is about the Who, What, When and Why of Liberty in the New World. The continents of North and South America, as well as the islands of the caribbean, produced an increase in luxury and liberty for some, side by side with an increase in captivity and servitude for others. Your central tasks in this essay are 1) to identify what either Sansay or Melville sees as the greatest (what is in the way of freedom, what’s blocking freedom) obstacle to freedom in the New World and 2) to show whether Sansay or Melville adopts, rejects, or shifts the way that primary sources discuss the same issue of freedom. To succeed in this essay, students will need to locate at least one primary source from the years 1690-1865 that directly addresses liberty or tyranny. You will also need to determine how Sansay or Melville enhances, opposes, or transforms the way the primary source depicts tyranny or liberty. You can begin with the literature or the source; either direction works.
