A recent report by Deloitte1 highlighted that: (1) continuous process improvement is a top strategic priority for executives and that process automation will play a critical part; and (2) more than 56 per cent of roles “in a typical UK finance function could still be automated.” The impact of automation on accounting work and the profession more widely is not new. However, the report also highlighted that “future automation is no longer expected to be delivered simply through existing ERP systems” as awareness about cloud computing and robotic process automation increases. Are we witnessing something different from the past? Will it be robots that replace accountants? Discuss.
