Essay Three: Collateral Learning
Assignment (from From Inquiry to Academic Writing): Both Neil Postman and bell hooks are “interested in what Postman refers to as ‘collateral learning’ (para. 6), a term coined by John Dewey that describes the cultural values and standards we learn while engaged in often entertaining pastime” (430).Using Dewey’s statements about learning, describe things that you have learned well, as well as things you have learned well collaterally. What did you learn about yourself as a learner?
To support your thesis statement, your final draft should have an introduction with a clear thesis statement which indicates the results of your inquiry-i.e. what you learned about popular culture, as well as brief references to both Postman and hooks’ texts. Your essay should also include fully-developed supporting paragraphs which describe the text you are analyzing. Use quotes, descriptions, and critical discussion to support your claim.
Other requirements: 3 to 5 pages in length, appropriately formatted to MLA style-including a Works Cited page-double-spaced, and fully-developed paragraphs with an interesting title.
