I have a course called writing for mass media. I need to finish a writing assignment. You need to master how to use news style writing – AP style. This assignment is very important to me, please take it seriously. You need to complete independently, can not copy other people’s information. I will check it.
Instructions: Write strong and effective ledes for print or the Internet — hard-news ledes that would be suitable for a story organized as an inverted pyramid. Your ledes must follow AP style and use proper grammar and proper spelling. They must be factually accurate from the information given in this section. You may not make up facts or embellish your ledes with information not given in this section. However, you are expected to correct any spelling, grammar or style errors contained in these items.
Please use 14-point Times or Palatino font and double-space your ledes. Submit them electronically or on paper, as instructed by your professor. The deadline will be given in class.
Please make sure that your name is on your paper.
1. It seems that cars are being stolen all the time in Troy. A 2007 Lexus LS sedan was taken from Bill Jackson Chevrolet yesterday morning. The car was parked there because the owner wanted Bill Jackson’s service department to change the oil in his car. (Bill Jackson currently has a $25.99 oil change special.) David W. Graves is the service manager at Bill Jackson Chevrolet. He spotted the stolen Lexus this morning on his way to work. He saw the car pulling out of Hardees on US Highway 231 in Troy. Graves used his cell phone to call Troy Police. Officer Buddy Mills responded, spotted the car and gave chase. The Lexus was being driven by John William Greenleaf, 18. Greenleaf lives at 8535 Talbot Avenue in Troy and he joined the US Navy after graduating high school. He was home on leave after completing his basic training in the Navy. Greanleaf lost control of the vehicle and crashed into a utility pole. Mills estimates that there are more than $40,000 in damages to the Lexus. Greenleaf received multiple injuries in the crash, including a broken right arm. These injuries didn’t keep him from running from the wrecked car to the nearby Sears store. Policeman Mills arrested Greenleaf while he was looking at socket wrenches in the store and charged him with stealing an automobile, wreckless driving resulting in an accident, fleeing an officer and leaving the scene of an accident.
2. Rabbi Paul Zlotick leads Troy’s Beth Or Temple and came to Troy after serving at the Central Synagogue in Macon, Georgia. While in Georgia, RabbiZlotick was the regional director for Programs at Synagogue 2000, a national project aimed at revitalizing synagogues from all streams of American Judaism. Rabbi Zlotick lives at 15 East Edgewood Drive in Troy. Six armed men kicked in the door of Rabbi Zlotick’s home last night in an incident that police are describing as a home invasion. Rabbi Zlotick was punched in the face, his home was ramshacked, his wife was hit over the head with a pistol and their son’s arm was slashed with a knife by one of the invaders. Two computers, a cell phone, some credit cards and a 52-inch HDTV were taken. Rabbi Zlotick was repeatedly punched in the face during the 11 minute ordeal. Troy Police arrested and charged Roderick Williams, 29, 18553 East Forks Road in Troy, with first-degree burglary and assult after he tried to use Rabbi Zlotick’s credit card in the drive-thru lane at Crow’s Chicken less than 15 minutes after the home invasion. The investigation and the search for the other home invasion suspects is continuing.
3. James William Masters of Troy was convicted nine years ago in the 1992 death of Peggy Hammond. She was the manager of Troy Fashions. The 27-year-old woman was raped, sexually mutilated and stabbed to death during a robbery at her store, which was located at that time on the square in downtown Troy. Masters was 15 years-old at the time and was arrested sitting on the curb outside the Troy Fashions store after the incident in what the police described as a drug-induced state. At his trail, a former girlfriend testified that Masters told her of his fantasy, which was very similar to the murder, torture and rape of Hammond. Pike County District Attorney Larry Long said today that he was going to ask the courts to release Masters from jail as soon as Tuesday because some newly discovered DNA evidence could have altered the outcome of his trial. A series of advanced DNA tests of Peggy Hammond’s clothing and body matches her boyfriend, not Williams. None of the DNA found related to this crime matched Masters. The DNA tests were conducted on some new test equipment bought last year by the Alabama Bureau of Investigation in Montgomery. DA Long sent the evidence to the lab after being asked to do so by Masters’ mother.
