Assignment 2: Annotated Bibliography
To prepare you for the next assignment, youll need to do some research. One of the more useful tools in conducting research is the annotated bibliography. An annotated bibliography combines the citations found in the References list at the end of documents in APA format with annotations about each of the sources. For this assignment, you will construct an annotated bibliography on the topic you have chosen for your research.
Purpose: An annotated bibliography is an organizing tool that is helpful when working on a research project. An effective annotated bibliography is used to compile research sources in one location and provide the researcher with quick access to the information contained in each source.
Audience: This assignment should be directed at your scholarly peers, and you may assume that they have only a casual familiarity with your topic or issue.
Content/Subject: Your annotated bibliography will consist of the sources that are relevant to your topic and/or question(s) of inquiry. While you may encounter sources that are not relevant or do not fit the scope of your project while researching, for the purposes of this assignment, you will only include the ones that you find useful and relevant.
Steps:
1. Cite the source in proper APA format. The citations should be organized in alphabetical order by author just as in an APA References page.
2. Follow with a brief annotation that summarizes the source (approx. 5 sentences). You may quote from the source, but do not copy and paste the abstract. Ideally, all of the annotation should be in your own words. You should describe the purpose or question of the research. How they conducted the research and their findings.
3. In 1 or 2 sentences, explain the sources relevance and importance to your issue.
Due date: This assignment is due on March 14th at 11:00pm on turnitin.com. Late assignments will not be accepted. You must use at least 10 scholarly sources (journals or books) for this bibliography.
Example:
Chappell A.T. & Gibson, L. (2007). Community Policing and Homeland Security Policing: Friend or Foe? Criminal Justice Policy Review, 20, 326-343.
Purpose/Question
Since 9/11 community policing has appeared to shift towards homeland security. Whether this represents a shift to new policing philosophy or a modification to an existing one is unclear. Are community policing and homeland security compatible? Or does the move toward homeland security policing signal the demise of community policing?
Methods
This study investigates these questions with data from virginia police chiefs.
Findings
Although many chiefs of police see emphasis on community policing waning in light of homeland security concerns, most of them see the two strategies as complementary.
Chiefs from smaller departments, 4-year education, and departments that were implementing higher levels of COP were less likely to see the emphasis on community waning.
Interesting Information (Optional)
– Pelfrey (2005) proposes that in addition to the role that community policing can play in gathering intelligence, successful strategies and tactics introduced under the community policing approach can be adapted to preventing and responding to terrorist attacks. In particular he endorses problem-oriented policing (POP) crime prevention through environmental design, the targeting of repeat offenders, early warning systems…..he endorses specially CPTED as one of the most promising strategies for preventing terrorism. This approach combats crime by altering the physical environment as well as incorporating both police and citizen surveillance. pg. 329.
– According to Friedman and Cannon (2007) the purpose of terrorism is to incite fear through the use of violent and criminal pursuit. And one of the key strategies of community policing model and big successes is the reduction of fear.
– De Guzman, argues that community policing is not a good strategy for reducing terrorist threats. pg. 330
****the goal of an anti-terrorist policy is not just eliminating the threat–both approaches could accomplish the goal—the question how much you are willing to alter the community and community police relationship to achieve this goal.
If the point is to eliminate terrorism, which seems impossible, then the best shot is to establish martial law. However, if the point is to reduce the threat and fear in the community and let the community be a tool, then it seems like community policing would be the best model for that.***
– The concern is that police administrators, with pressure from politicians, may be tempted to abandon community policing for more visible and aggressive policing strategies associated with the traditional policing model (Murray, 2005). 331
– The reality is that funding drives policing priorities and funding has shifted to homeland security. (Oliver, 2004) 332.
