International news Academic Essay

For this assignment, you will listen to or read selected international news on a regular basis for three
weeks (March 7 – March 25). The objective is for you to survey a small variety of international
journalism outlets, and familiarize yourself not only with international events but with the ways in which
you can access coverage of those events.

Over the course of the three consecutive weeks, utilize at least one source from the bulleted list below AS
WELL AS 30 minutes of “news” from MSNBC, FOX, CNN, or a local news program. For each show you
listen to, series of articles you read or show you watch, write UP TO one page in which you
• summarize what you learned
• offer personal evaluation of the show/s (is it presented well? Is it objective? Is it well-rounded?)
• identify at least one question you have after having heard/read/watched the source
• If you followed-up on something you learned (read a separate article on the same issue, did a
search or followed a link regarding something you read or heard), be sure to note that in your
paper.

Because you are writing at most one page per show or series of articles, you should have about 6 pages
(two sources per week for three weeks).
Each page or entry should include the name of the source as
well as the date you accessed the source.

• “The World” from Public Radio International (PRI) and National Public Radio (NPR). This airs
M-F at 3:00 on 90.3FM. You can also access archives/podcasts here (http://www.pri.org/
programs/the-world) or download an app for iPhone or Droid here (www.theworld.org/apps).
Once you download the app, go to “PRI’s The World” and choose “Full Program.” One full
program = one “source” for this assignment.

• “World Have Your Say” from British Broadcasting Company (BBC). This show airs daily at 1pm
on 90.3FM. You can also access podcasts (including a Yahoo and iTunes option) or subscribe to
RSS feeds here (http://www.bbc.co.uk/podcasts/series/whys). One full program = one “source”
for this assignment.

• Access the BBC’s “Top Stories” either here (www.bbc.co.uk) or via the app (available in the app
store; make sure to choose the free download of the “BBC News” app). Read 5 of the 6 or 8
stories headlining at the top of their front page.
Five articles from the same day = one source for
this assignment.

• Sign-up for “UN Dispatch” here (https://www.smartbrief.com/un_wire/index.jsp) and read five of
the articles sent in a “Dispatch”. Five articles = one source for this assignment.
