Classical decision theory views the manager as acting in a world of complete certainty.
Behavioral decision theory accepts the notion of bounded rationality and suggests that people act only in terms of what they perceive about a given situation.
Classical and Behavioral Decision Theory: Classical decision theory assumes that the manager faces a clearly defined problem, knows all possible action alternatives and their consequences, and then chooses the alternative that offers the best, or “optimum,” solution to the problem.
Most of us have access to decision-making support from expert systems that reason like human experts and follow “either–or” rules to make deductions. Fuzzy logic that reasons beyond either–or choices and neural networks that reason inductively by simulating the brain’s parallel processing capabilities are becoming operational realities that will move beyond simple programmed decisions.

Any supervisor or manager always has to make decision in their daily job. The key to be successful is making appropriate decisions to solve and handle problems and issues that may happen. We learn from textbook that there are some decision-making models that help us to understand more process of making decision to be more successful in working with other people. In the classical decision models, the author said, “optimum decisions identifying the absolute best choice are made after analyzing with full information all possible alternatives and their consequences” (Uhl-Bien, Osborn, & Schermerhorn, 2014, p. 208). Working as a beverage store supervisor, I always have to supervise all operational activities of the store. Beside of monitoring inventory and following employee work schedule, customer service is always the first priority. Moreover, dealing with employees or customers is always required making decision fast and hard even it affects the company, but it is crucial for our success. Some scenarios can be used the classical decision models. Sometime, we have people call of for sick or emergency. Because being a store supervisor, I always have to be aware of situation and make decision right away. Based on working schedule and employees’ information, I have to contact another employee to make sure she or she can cover for the person in emergency situation. Meanwhile I have to also update information for my manager to know daily store operation. Making sure enough employees for each shift is always important because it is related to customer service. We cannot provide good services when we do not have enough employees or baristas to make drinks and clean up around working area. Keep in mind that improving customer satisfied will always bring them back to the business.
Beside of dealing with employees called for sick or emergency sometimes, there are also conflicts between employees. Sometimes I have to make decision that should I discipline and strict them to keep up with good works, or I should motivate them and be more flexible. Most of situations are required to make decision quickly to help business going well and smooth. Moreover, we are in charge of hiring and training directly new employees, based on their performance I have to make decision and be a good judge of character to help my manager that we will hire the right people to maintain good service and an efficient team working.
In the behavioral decision model, the author said, “satisficing decisions that choose the first acceptable alternative are made with limited information and bounded rationality” (Uhl-Bien, Osborn, & Schermerhorn, 2014, p. 208). Customer service is always the first priority of our store. However, ensuring high levels of customer satisfaction is always a challenge. Being a store supervisor, I always have to make decision to delivery a good service and respond to customer complaints and concerns in a professional manner. Customers sometimes complaint about the drinks for some reasons, they want to know more about the ingredient in the drinks, or they want to customize their own drinks. Being a store supervisor, I cannot wait for my manager to give me all information to handle each situation. In all situations, I have to make decision to help customer reasonably. However, I have my limits, and I cannot be everything to every customer, but I always find an alternate remedy to their situation and tell them what I can do when customers have their requests.
Being a store supervisor, I have to make decision everyday. Many decisions are easy, but some decisions are stressful and hard because they affect or impact on results, cost, time, or relationships. Understanding optimizing decision making process or satisficing decision making help me create a culture of clarity while working with coworkers and customers.
