i need to Explain what you understand by a sociocultural approach to language and literacy learning. What is the role of social interaction? Is there one way of learning to talk, read and write that is ‘normal’ and ‘natural’ or are there many different ways that relate to the context in which they take place? Do some ways of learning have more status than others? If so, why do you think this is? When and where do babies and young children start to learn to talk read and write? Are children empty vessels to be filled with knowledge when they come to school, or have they already learned a great deal from their families and communities? What do you understand by the term community here? What exactly are some of the experiences that children have of learning to talk, read and write at home? What are the differences and why do you think they exist? Give two or three specific examples from your reading and from case studies we have examined on the course. Choose children with contrasting experiences. The following questions should help your analysis: What kinds of interactions around literacy happen at home and in the community? Who are they with? What cultural resources do they involve? What us the purpose of them ? What is the role of language(s) ? What have the children learnt about language and literacy from these interactions? Are they encouraged to use this knowledge when they go to school. If so, how? Compare and contrast the experiences of the two or three case studies. Do some children make the transition from home to school more smoothly? If some groups are excluded, why do you think this is the case? How could it be different?
